A MYM promotion is worthwhile when its subscribers’ net earnings cover acquisition and service costs, with a better contribution than the offer without a promotion. New subscriber count is not enough. Track what each group pays initially, what it buys later, and which renewals actually happen.
A large discount can make an offer easier to try. It can also attract more people than you can serve, reduce immediate earnings, or lower the price for fans who would have subscribed anyway. Prepare the calculation before choosing the percentage.
The useful measure
For each campaign, compare cohort contribution: net subscriptions, additional purchases, and renewals, minus the costs of acquiring and serving that group.

Understand what the campaign changes
MYM campaigns are created under Settings → Promotions → New campaign. The discount ranges from 5% to 100% and applies to the first month. One campaign can be active; discounts do not stack, and the most favorable offer applies.
A fan can use a discount greater than 50% only once every six months with the same creator. Check the offer actually applied before explaining a price. An advertised campaign and a charged amount are not necessarily identical information.
Record the launch conditions: regular price, discount, date, promise, and intended audience. That note lets you recover the context when reviewing renewals weeks later. Without it, different offers can end up mixed in the same result.
Prepare an experience you can deliver at the reduced price
A discount changes the entry price, not the work you promised. Check that the profile has enough included content to welcome new subscribers and that the coming weeks are planned. A lower price does not make an empty profile useful.
Write down what the subscription includes and what is sold separately. If private media purchases are part of the plan, prepare accurate descriptions and available content. Fans should be able to enjoy the subscription without discovering that its entire value depends on unannounced additional purchases.
- A bio and introduction consistent with the offer.
- Included content available immediately.
- A realistic program for the arrival period.
- Clearly identified and priced additional media.
- Time or an organization for incoming conversations.
- A record of payments and costs associated with the campaign.
If the regular price is still unclear, start with MYM subscription pricing. A permanent promotion does not replace a reference price supported by the experience you deliver.
Calculate net earnings, then account for costs
The following example is entirely hypothetical. Unit amounts are assumed net earnings after platform deductions and refunds, not MYM prices or fee rates. Both groups are observed through their first opportunity to renew, with the same observation window for additional purchases.
Assumptions: 100 regular-price subscribers produce €10 net each initially; 180 promotional subscribers produce €5. Additional net purchases average €4 per person in both groups. A first renewal produces €10 net, with 40% of the first group and 25% of the promotional group renewing.
| Item | Regular price | Promotion |
|---|---|---|
| New subscribers | 100 | 180 |
| Initial net subscriptions | €1,000 | €900 |
| Additional net purchases | €400 | €720 |
| First net renewals | €400 | €450 |
| Net cohort earnings | €1,800 | €2,070 |
| Acquisition and service costs | €300 | €650 |
| Contribution after these costs | €1,500 | €1,420 |
The promotion produces €270 more in net earnings but requires €350 in additional costs. Contribution falls by €80. Your account may behave differently; the table shows which inputs need to be measured.
Do not subtract platform deductions twice when starting from net earnings. Separate actual cash costs from the value assigned to your own time, and show both. If the campaign reuses existing production, distinguish historical creation costs from additional campaign costs.
This also prevents a common comparison error: one group appears inexpensive because your own work was ignored, while the other includes every outsourced hour. Use the same costing rules on both sides.
Treat a free first month as a budget decision
At a 100% discount, the initial subscription no longer funds acquisition or service for that cohort. Earnings must come from additional purchases or subsequent payments. They remain uncertain until they actually occur.
Build three scenarios: no earnings after entry, a cautious outcome based on comparable history, and a more favorable outcome. Do not use the strongest scenario to decide how much money or work you can commit.
Set a limit before launch
Write down the amount and time you are willing to spend on the test, plus the review date. If the free month attracts many people, that limit still matters. Volume does not remove the cost.
Do not count every future purchase as a gain caused by the discount. Some people might have subscribed without it. A comparable group or period can help, especially when traffic sources, offer, and season are similar, but keep the interpretation limit clear.
Follow people who entered under the same offer
Create one campaign record and a group of fans who entered through it. Track entries, first payments, reliably linked additional purchases, refunds, costs, and completed renewals. Keep free trials separate from first paid subscriptions.
For renewal, use subscribers who have reached a comparable renewal date as the denominator. Someone who arrived yesterday has not had that opportunity. An enabled renewal setting is not a collected payment.
A discount does not explain every difference. A new series, a stronger traffic source, or faster replies can affect results. Record those events beside the figures rather than assigning every change to the campaign.
The guide to giving MYM subscribers a reason to renew helps you work on the experience after arrival. Prepare that experience before increasing the number of incoming fans.
Decide what to keep after the test
Keep a promotion that improves contribution
Check the experience and workload as well. A result that depends on hours you cannot repeat is not a sustainable routine.
Reduce the discount when volume does not compensate
Test a smaller reduction while keeping the promise stable. You want to learn what price changes, not rebuild the whole offer every time.
Repair the offer when new subscribers disengage
Review the welcome, content availability, and differences between the promise and reality. Repeated discounts will not fix a disappointing experience.
A valid review can also conclude that more observation time is needed. Wait for the relevant renewal dates instead of presenting a young cohort as profitable over several months.
Prepare conversations before the campaign
Unly can handle configured replies and media offers when new fans arrive. Describe precisely what is included and what is separately priced. Include the cost of that organization in your calculation.
